People live in Overland Park and work downtown on the Missouri side without thinking about it. The commute crosses a state line twice a day and nobody mentions it.

In the Kansas City metro this is the single most useful thing you can put in a greeting. Naming your side of the state line, and whether you will cross it, saves everyone a conversation that was never going to work.
Name the county rather than the suburb. Johnson County places you instantly. The specific suburb often does not, especially to callers on the Missouri side who know the metro by its bigger pieces.
Independence is the one oddity worth knowing about. It sits in Missouri but reaches callers on the 913 Kansas number, so if you are out that way, dial the Kansas side.
Kansas is one of the few states that started with two
Most states got a single area code in 1947 and split it later. Kansas was cut in half from the very beginning, and the line drawn back then still shapes which number gets dialled today. 913 took the north, 316 took the south.
In 1997 growth in the Kansas City suburbs used up the numbers. Everything from Lawrence westward broke off as 785, and 913 was cut back to the Kansas side of the metro, which is exactly what it still covers. The southern half split the same way in 2001, leaving 316 as an island of Wichita completely ringed by 620.
Kansas still runs on four straightforward geographic codes with none stacked on top of another, so an area code here tells you exactly where someone is. One caution: the number MyMobileLine uses for a city does not always match that city's own code. Salina and Manhattan both sit in 785 but reach callers on the 620 number.
Despite a modest population, Kansas was divided lengthwise into two numbering areas when the first national plan was drawn up in 1947. Very few states received two codes on day one, and 913 has anchored the Kansas City side ever since.
