From the mountains to the coast, three different states
North Carolina runs further east to west than almost any state in the South. Asheville and Greenville have almost nothing in common, and the line reflects that.

Beyond the big three, 828 covers Asheville and the mountains, 910 is Fayetteville and the Sandhills, and 252 covers the eastern coastal plain including Greenville, Rocky Mount and Wilson.

North Carolina received 704 and 919 in the original 1947 numbering plan, one for the west and one for the east. Every other code in the state has split off those two since, and both are still in service.
