When the first nationwide numbering plan was drawn up, most states received a single area code. Texas was handed four at once, because even then it was too big for one. 214 took Dallas, 512 took Austin, 713 took Houston, and 915 took El Paso.
Every Texas code since has split off one of those four. The Metroplex alone now carries 214, 469, 682, 817 and 972, which tells you most of what you need to know about how fast North Texas grew.
